An oath (from Anglo-Saxon āð, also called plight) is either a statement of fact or a promise calling upon something or someone that the oath maker considers sacred, usually God, as a witness to the binding nature of the promise or the truth of the statement of fact. To swear is to take an oath, to make a solemn vow. The essence of a divine oath is an invocation of divine agency to be a guarantor of the oath taker's own honesty and integrity in the matter under question. By implication, this invokes divine displeasure if the oath taker fails in their sworn duties. It therefore implies greater care than usual in the act of the performance of one's duty, such as in testimony to the facts of the matter in a court of law. A person taking an oath indicates this in a number of ways. The most usual is the explicit "I swear," but any statement or promise that includes "with * as my witness" or "so help me *," with '*' being something or someone the oath-taker holds sacred, is an oath. Many people take an oath by holding in their hand or placing over their head a book of scripture or a sacred object, thus indicating the sacred witness through their action: such an oath is called corporal. However, the chief purpose of such an act is for ceremony or solemnity, and the act does not of itself make an oath. In Western countries it is customary to raise the right hand while swearing an oath, whether or not the left hand is laid on a Bible or other text. This custom originated during the Medieval period when convicted felons were often branded on the palm of the right hand with a letter or mark indicating their conviction. Since felons were disqualified from making declarations under oath, an oath-taker would display their right hand to show that they were free of convictions and therefore able take an oath. There is confusion between oaths and other statements or promises. The current Olympic Oath, for instance, is really a pledge and not properly an oath since there is only a "promise" and no appeal to a sacred witness. Oaths are also confused with vows, but really a vow is a special kind of oath. From Wikipedia under the

My interview date is 5/25, and I have about 2 months trip plan during the summer break. So, anyone know how long will it take from naturalization interview to oath in Buffalo? If I reschedule that, will it lead too much delay? Thanks very much! Can you estimate that? Asked by tao tao - Tue Apr 20 10:15:37 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. I guess you will have to decide which one will be more important, your citizenship or your vacation time. I'd go with the first because after you get your citizenship, you'll be free to move about the country. Not to say that you aren't. Q. My husband just passed his citizenship interview. We haven't received word yet on when he is scheduled to take the oath of allegiance. How long do people in his situation typically wait? I'm just curious. I do know that he will be asked what he's done since the interview. Thanks! Asked by eyeswideopen37880 - Wed Mar 17 21:44:30 2010 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. I really all depends on where you live. It took me about 6 weeks to receive my letter to show up for my naturalization oath ceremony. They will send you a paper stating that you passed the test and when to show up for the ceremony. I do not know why you think they will ask your husband what he has been doing since the interview--this was never asked of me. This is what I had to do: You show up at the Federal Courthouse--go into a room with about 100 other people--they call your name in groups--you hand in your green card--go back to your seat until every one has been called--then the judge gives his/her speech--then you take the oath--hopefully in English--most of the people who were in my group did not even say it--they just stood… [cont.] Answered by Penny - Wed Mar 17 22:07:29 2010 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Oath" New Cadets to Participate in Oath Ceremony - Virginia Military Institute
