Humour or humor (see American and British English spelling differences) is the tendency of particular cognitive experiences to provoke laughter and provide amusement. Many theories exist about what humour is and what social function it serves. People of all ages and cultures respond to humour. The majority of people are able to be amused, to laugh or smile at something funny, and thus they are considered to have a "sense of humour." The term derives from the humoral medicine of the ancient Greeks, which stated that a mix of fluids known as humours (Greek: χυμός, chymos, literally juice or sap; metaphorically, flavour) controlled human health and emotion. (This theory has since been found to be counterfactual.) A sense of humour is the ability to experience humour, although the extent to which an individual will find something humorous depends on a host of variables, including geographical location, culture, maturity, level of education, intelligence, and context. For example, young children may possibly favour slapstick, such as Punch and Judy puppet shows or cartoons (e.g., Tom and Jerry). Satire may rely more on understanding the target of the humour, and thus tends to appeal to more mature audiences. Nonsatirical humour can be specifically termed "recreational drollery." Smiling can imply a sense of humour and a state of amusement, as in this painting by Eduard von Grützner. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Why do people have such different senses of humor? Q. I've noticed that a ton of things I find hilarious (to the point where I laugh hysterically), other people don't even find funny. And I don't have an immature sense of humor. Socially speaking though, why do people have different senses of humor? The way they were brought up? Life experiences? For example, I have a smart humor, and find Spongebob and Family Guy hilarious, not only for the intended jokes, but just the whole situation. It's funny to think there's even a situation with all of the characters from Spongebob - you can look at it from two levels - the whole situation, or the intended jokes. I laugh at both, but some people don't understand the situational humor and just the intended jokes, whereas other people like my dad… [cont.] Asked by Ryan - Wed Feb 4 13:12:43 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Answered by Rakim - Wed Feb 4 13:19:47 2009 What is the distinct difference between humor and satire? Q. What's the distinct difference between humor and satire? Asked by Rajasegaran S - Wed Nov 26 08:22:51 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. A satire is usually something which is based on what a person has done, or failed to do - impersonations in otherwords. Good satirists also create impersonations, much like sasha bowen cohen with Borat and Ali G. Humour is the reaction that people give towards satire. I believe it was infact, the greeks that said that all forms of comedy have satire in them. Answered by the redcap - Wed Nov 26 08:34:47 2008 What kind of twisted abnormal sense of humor do you have?
Q. What are the kinds of things you laugh at that would kill someones braincells if you tried to explain it to them? Does your humor go by randomness, funny shapes, angles, abnormal phrases, funny noises, smell? For eg. I go by funny shapes and angles. When someone asked me what I was laughing at, I said "oh, can you imagine if that vacuum cleaner handle started bouncing out of nowhere?" His response was "...". Answered by aseptic technique - Sat Feb 28 00:34:42 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Humor" Comedy has a popular meaning (stand-up, along with any discourse generally intended to amuse), which differs from its academic definition, namely the comic theatre, whose Western origins are found in Ancient Greece. The theatrical genre can be simply described as a dramatic performance pitting two societies against each other in an amusing agon or conflict. Comedy contains variations on the elements of surprise, incongruity, conflict, repetitiveness, and the effect of opposite expectations, and there are many recognized genres. Sourced
