What are some activities I can do with my BIG dog inside while it is raining outside?
Q. I want some ideas of some fun activities that I can play with my Weimaraner indoors. It is raining outside, and he hates going out in the rain. I want some activities that don't result in wrecking my house, as those Weims have A LOT of energy! Please comment, give me some of your fun activities you play with your dogs inside (big dog or small dog even), and thanks for commenting!

A. Aim at a good brain work out rather than a physical romp, and you'll still have a happy, but tired dog at the end of it. You can buy great wooden toys where you hide food in the maze/cups and the dog has to work out which bit of the puzzle the food is under, or you can use the rainy time to increase your dog's obedience, or repertoire of tricks - how about adding roll over/play dead/bow... or teaching him to fetch a toy by name? Clicker training is useful here. Of course, he'll still need a good run when it stops raining - but you'll both have had fun and he'll have learned some new tricks at the same time.

What tourist activities in Maui & Oahu require booking at least 5 days ahead?
Q. In my research, I noticed a few tips about needing to book some activities at least 5 days in advance---at the time I was just browsing and thought I'd run into it again upon further research. Now planning activities for our Hawaii trip and want to make sure I cover all my bases. I figure luaus don't have to be booked early...maybe like sunset cruises? Anyone? Are there others to be sure to book in advance?

A. It kind of depends on when you are going. We've found that summer months (when kids are out of school) and holidays tend to be extra busy. Thing tend to book up during those times. Actually Old Lahaina Luau on Maui books up a lot year round, so if you are thinking about that one, you should definitely book it asap. It's arguably the best in Hawaii. Some activities are cheaper if you book directly with the company ahead of time. Trilogy on Maui is one company that comes to mind. What extracurricular activities should I participate in if I want to get into dental school?
Q. I'm interesting in becoming a dentist when I'm older. So while I'm still in high school, what extracurricular activities (inside and outside of school) should I participate in so I can get a better understanding of what being a dentist is like? How about in university? On another note, since extracurricular activities and the "whole picture" is considered along with the dental school application, I'm wondering how students who aspire to become dentists find time to volunteer, job shadow, etc, while at the same time, excel academically. Thank you!

Q. What are considered moderate physical activities and what are vigorous physical activities? And how much does an 18 year old boy need of each to maintain weight?

A. enough activity to raise your heart rate to 50% over normal for 20 to 30 minutes a day is a good target. but you can get that by brisk walking which is not all that demanding. walking and climbing stairs instead of taking drives and using elevators is probably the best way to maintain a basic level of fitness. add in some easy exercises and you will get even better. but don't forget to eat lots of good nutritious food including plenty of fresh fruits and veggies while limiting fat laden and starchy foods. Get enough sleep every night and enjoy lots of fresh air and sunshine too to improve overall health. It is more a combo of what you eat, how you live and the physical activities you engage in that make the best program for overall… [cont.]

A. Yikes. That didn't sound good. Schools of that level like to see that you're really dedicated to something you do - they like to see that you put a lot of time and effort into it, and stuck with it for several years. If you have anything like that, you should definitely include it. Ahh, it's bad to just add "extra things", if they honestly didn't have a big impact on your life. Get involved with something that you're actually really interested in, not just what will look better in the end. You'll be happier and better off that way. However, some things which DO look good would be the work in the pharmacy (excellent), any leadership positions you may have, or community service. Graduate schools love to see community service. What activities will exercise my attention span?
Q. What type of general activities and hobbies help develop an attention span? Any ideas on what may hamper it?
Asked by Todd M - Mon Dec 3 22:29:02 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I find games like kyodai and other puzzle games great for working out my brain. Obviously partaking in drugs will mess with your attention span, as will alchohol, lack of sleep or stress. I believe physical exercise strengthens the mind as well, by providing stimulation, and lessens depression. And yes, meditation is wonderful, empty the mind and you can focus on problems or whatever much easier.

What activities can I plan to make a retirement party memorable?
Q. My dad's boss and I are planning a large retirement/55th birthday party for him. We are planning for a large group of about 75 people. It will be a surprise party. Dad is a fisherman, so I've decided to have a fish fry and go with a "gone fishing" theme. I've found plenty of party favors and decorations, but I'd really like to get the guests involved. I think it would be hard to play games with that many people. I'd like to try to have some activities that are fun and funny that will make the party truly memorable. Dad is not a sentimental person, I don't think he'd care too much about a scrapbook and I know he won't watch a videotape. I'd really appreciate any suggestions you can offer! Many thanks.

A. Make a list and call it Fish Tales. Make several things that are true about your dad that people would never have known , and then make several that are false, read them out loud and by a show of hands, have people guess if it's a fish tale/ or true story. Your dad will like hearing things from his past or things you have noticed about him while growing up and the guests will love learning more things about the guest of honor!

What activities do your students do when they enter the room in the morning?
Q. I'm looking for ideas of activities my third graders can do while we are waiting for everyone to arrive. We have about a 25 minute time span from the time the first kid walks in the door until everyone arrives. For the past two years I've had the kids write down homework assignments, sharpen pencils, and complete a worksheet, but I'd like to find something more fun and meaningful (and that won't take a lot of time to grade/correct) for next year. Any suggestions? Thanks!

A. There is a series put out by Evan Moor that I love! It's a daily reinforcement of math and language activities. They are in packets (M - F) and every day has 5 questions. The books are set up nicely and usually work as exposure to new concepts on Friday's and review the other days. Daily Language Review: Daily Math Practice: Daily Word Problems: I wrote a grant this year, so starting next year, I'll be using "Mountain Math" and "Mountain Language." I used it in another district and love it. It's similar to the above books but it's a bulletin board set. You can see more about it here:

A. One of the best books I've read about the beginning of the school year is "The First Six Weeks of School." This book has detailed lesson plans for the first few weeks of school and then broader plans for the rest of the six weeks. Before you can do much academic teaching, you must teach the students the routines of the classroom from how to enter the room, lining up, asking questions, using the restroom, getting supplies, etc. and give them ample opportunity to practice them so that they know the routines and can do them in their sleep so to speak; if this is done, you will not be disturbed during the teaching time by a student not knowing what to do. If the students learn what is expected of them as far as following classroom… [cont.]

What are some good activities for a child with an auditory processing disorder?
Q. My nephew is seven years old and has been diagnosed with having an auditory processing disorder. He sees a speech therapist twice a week at his elementary school. What are some activities I can do with him to help him? Any ideas on how to incorporate these activities in daily tasks? Yes, he does sees his speech therapist on a one-on-one basis.
Asked by BrownEyedBettie - Wed Jan 7 23:54:31 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Visuals, visuals, visuals...those will the most important to him. Using pictures to communicate schedule, tasks, etc. would be very important in communicating daily activities. A lot of hands on manipulations when actually looking at learning tasks would be great also. For example, if helping him with math, give him actual manipulatives, like counting bears, to help work through addition and subtraction problems. When working on spelling words, giving him alphabet tiles or foam letters to spell out the words. You have to think in the sense that what he hears does not always make sense and the brain will sometimes get confused. What he sees does make sense to him...think that way and you shouldn't have any problem.

A. Check out the complete list of 70 games or see if these outdoor party games will work for your event. You might also want to check out Halloween games - the story telling ones might be interesting. They had a good mix here, that should help you keep everyone entertained. Sarah
