Originally, in continental Europe, a county (contea or contado, comté, comtat, condado, Grafschaft, Gau) was the land under the jurisdiction of a count (conte, comte, conde, Graf). Counties are called earldoms in post-Celtic Britain, Ireland and France—the term is from Old Norse jarl and was introduced by the Vikings—but there is no correlation between counties and earldoms. Rather, county, from French comté, was simply used by the Normans after 1066 to replace the native English term scir ([ʃir])—Modern English shire. In the United Kingdom, many county names derive from the name of the county town with the word "shire" added on: for example, Gloucester, in Gloucestershire; Worcester, in Worcestershire; etc. From Wikipedia under the

Is there a time limit for Los Angeles County Jail to transfer you to the county you have a warrant? Aren't they suppose to release you after 72 hours if they dont do the transfer? One, the other county has listed your warrant on the State records system and possibly with NCIC, a national data base. Any routine query by an officer will bring up the warrant information. So, the first time you get pulled over for a traffic violation, you get busted for the warrant. Two, someone in the other county will rat you out eventually and you will be arrested at your home or new job. Get yourself a lawyer and try to arrange something with the other county or just turn yourself in.
