Anyone who has ever experienced a natural disaster that could help me out with a homework?
Q. What type of disaster did you experience? When and where did this disaster occur? What did you do to prepare for the disaster? A. The Columbus Day Storm (most powerful extratropical cyclone recorded in the U.S. in the 20th century). In less than 12 hours, over 11 billion board feet of timber was blown down in northern California, Oregon and Washington combined. This exceeded the annual timber harvest for Oregon and Washington at the time. Pacific Northwest, October 12, 1962. For northwest Oregon, the entire power distribution system had to be rebuilt from the ground up. Some locations did not have power restored for several weeks. None. We had no real warning and no one living had experienced anything like this. None. I was 10 years old. Afterwards, I was amazed at the damage and devastation in my neighborhood and town. Will the recession make America less charitable for foreign disaster relief?
Q. Like everyone else I heard about the disaster in Myanmar. The problem is that I personally cannot afford to donate any money to Myanmar disaster relief. I was in the same position after Hurricane Katrina. One of the greatest problems with the recession is that when a disaster happens either here or somewhere else, many Americans honestly cannot afford to donate to disaster relief. I am now getting to a point where I don't want to see any foreign disasters on TV or online anymore.

A. America gives the MOST of any developed nation. We are standing by with helicopters, air craft carriers, C-130 transport plane and amphibious ships, all ready to deliver our aid and the aid of other nations. If you can't afford to donate money now, that's ok. There are plenty of people who can and will (ie. like Bill Gates' foundation donating $3 Million). I donated money after Sept. 11th and after hurricane Katrina because I could. I will do what I can to donate money now as well.

What is your worst cooking disaster in the kitchen?
Q. This morning I was cooking a pot roast in my crock pot. I tried to move the crock pot from the counter to the stove top, but the cord got hung up on the coffee percolator. The crock pot slipped out of my hands and landed upside down in the garbage can that was almost full, and the coffee pecolator tipped over and spilled coffee all over the floor. That was my worst cooking disaster. My wife and daughter laughed, because it was pretty funny. We went to Applebee s for Sunday lunch. So waht was your worst cooking disaster?

What type of dog crate is best to buy for disaster evacuations?
Q. Ever since I heard about all the dogs left behind during Katrina and the ones that were not allowed into shelters because their owners didn't have proper crates for them, i have been so worried the same would happen to my dogs. Although I think I'd rather die in a disaster than leave my dogs behind, I want to be prepared in case this happens. Are there certain crates that are acceptable for evacuations on public transit and entrance into shelters? There are so many different types and I just don't know if certain ones would not be permissable for this purpose. Can anyone help?
Asked by dani - Wed Jun 13 23:54:53 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Buy a folding crate it can be stored folded down and carried like a suitcase, then very easily assembled. They are best because the dog has full view out of the metal bars to see it's surroundings. Dogs in plastic vari kennels don't have a very good view out and can become more agitated in them. Four Paws makes a nice one called a Dlx Folding Crate and comes in lengths of 19,24,30,36,42 and 48" long

How to find entry level disaster relief jobs such as with Fema?
Q. I am a recent college grad looking to get into disaster relief work. I am looking for a job with FEMA, Red Cross, etc. The problem is they don't really seem to have to many entry level type of positions. Any ideas on who to talk to, or where to go to get more experience for these types of jobs?
Asked by hairy_hogleg - Fri May 30 11:38:42 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. To get experience that will make you attractive for relief work, get all the disaster training you can from the American Red Cross and join them as a volunteer. You could also look into volunteering at your local fire station and getting training for that as well. This kind of volunteering will not only get you training and experience, it will also get you in contact with people who are professionals, and that can often lead to paid work. You might consider learning a second language as well -- this will make you particularly attractive to organizations like FEMA. Spanish is an obvious choice, but just about anything would be of value.

A. I think that it is great that you want to volunteer for the Disater Service branch of the Red Cross. You won't find a typical day in the field. It varies from day to day and from emergency/disaster. Lets say you live in an area where there is a lot of tornados. Now lets say you were called out on 3 of these tornados Each time you went out you would have different experiences and different jobs to do. One time you may be helping with search and rescue in the field. Another they may need you at the temporary shelter passing out food and blankets and making phone calls. You have to be committed to being a volunteer with them. When diaster strikes you are going to have to put your family to the side and concentrate on helping other… [cont.]

What percentage of total losses does disaster insurance pay?
Q. What percentage of the property is covered by disaster insurance, generally?
Asked by the "eggster" - Sat May 3 22:39:32 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The cars and motorcycle should be covered under their own policies. Depending on the type of boat and trailer, same with them. (If it is a small boat, under $40k, it might have coverage). What will be covered for your house depends on your policy. If the replacement cost of your house is $250k, and you have $250k of coverage, it will be replaced completely, less your deductible. Most home policies have coverage for personal property (not counting vehicles and large boats) of 50% of the value of your home. In this case, up to $125k. This seems to be enough to cover your personal stuff. You need to try to remember what company insured your house and vehicles, and give them a call. Hopefully you were insured up to the value of your house.… [cont.]

A. Let it out of the cage...if it flies away...that's a pretty good sign! Seriously though, birds have an unusual behavior, you will surely notice any behavioral changes if there is any sort of disaster about to occur, for instance your bird might start whistling quite erratic and fluttering around it's cage. also watch to see if it starts storing food and eating sparingly, unless it is in a panic and then it just won't eat at all, finally, you said the bird is hand raised, being very social it might get clingy by flying to you and not wanting to leave your presence of protection.

Why are there so many tragic natural disaster happening in Asia?
Q. 2 years ago it was the Tsunami. Last December it was a cyclone in Bangladesh. And now a cyclone in Myanmar and an earthquake on China. Why on Asia all the time. We should be lucky we live in U.S that we don't have that much natural disaster.
Asked by whatever441 - Tue May 13 20:11:33 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. First of all, it's the largest continent on Earth, therefore we should expect those disasters. Second, the span of the continent, from extremely mountainous regions to tons of coastline, make it vulnerable to all forms of disasters. Thirdly, many countries there lack the engineering resources of countries like the USA, therefore the natural disasters are typically more deadly (compare the recent earthquake in China with 12k+ deaths to earthquakes in California where the death toll is in single digits), thus will be reported to a stronger degree in the media.

Q. The California wildfire was caused by suspected arson, so why are they calling it a natural disaster? only so the government will give them money?
Asked by Cincy G - Thu Oct 25 09:37:13 2007 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A wildland fire started by lightening is a natural disaster. A fire started directly (arson) or indirectly (downed power line) by man is technically not a naturally caused disaster. It is a man-made disaster. So, pick your definition. Federal aid is not dependent upon the cause of the fire.

A. method to predict earthquakes : electricity conductivity measurements in the soil (looking for water masses). Not very reliable. Was tried in Greece 25 years ago... VAN method volcano : via earthquake statistics and magma chamber angular measurements. tsunami : none. Only observation with buoys and warning system can help (1 h forecast, enough to evacuate a beach) flooding : a few hours delay once it has rained. See rain prediction for 24 to 48 h delay. Lots of methods involve extrapolating data from a past trend (it has been raining for the last 6 hours, therefore the river level will go up), or looking for existing historical scenarios (like it is exactly as during the 1999 great flood, same pattern, same area, same consequences).
