What faculty does behavioral economics belong to?
Q. Is it usually under Psychology faculty, MBA, or Economics...? What are the top schools that offer such study in Master programs?
Asked by cw - Thu Aug 13 19:43:21 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Economics is a liberal art and is almost always found in that school at the university, although some places put it in the college of business [wrongly in my opinion]. Top schools in economics are Princeton, George Mason [libertarian in outlook], Standford, Chicago [of course], NYU, Rochester - many more. Here is an excellent graduate program in international economics [wait for it] - Texas A&M - George H Bush School. Definitely worth looking into for an exciting and worthwhile program.

A. Faculty is any one involved in the "learning" eg. the drama teacher -- Administration would be a department , management, and the office work, not directly related to education.

Proper way to approach a potential faculty advisor in a Phd program?
Q. I'm in the social sciences and I've been told to narrow my schools down and look out for potential advisors that I want to work with. The schools I am applying to are very far away and I need to know how to start conversing with potential chairs. What if there are 2 or 3 faculty members that have the same emphasis I want to explore? How do I choose?

A. Email them. If they are all in the same department, email them one at a time. Read up on their research first, and then email them asking about it and if they are taking on graduate students.

What's the difference between "faculty" and "staff"?
Q. Especially in relation to a college campus, what is the difference between the "faculty" and the "staff"?
Asked by Anthony C - Mon Jan 15 20:22:59 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. "Faculty" refers to those who teach (professors, lecturers, etc.). Technically, everyone getting a salary from the college or university is on "staff", but we tend to use that word to refer to the administrative staff (secretaries, assistants, deans, presidents, etc).

What does it mean to be an adjunct faculty at a university?
Q. If a professor is an adjunct faculty what does that mean? Why is there no chance of being tenured?
Asked by Snowflakes - Fri Dec 18 20:47:23 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Basically, it means they are only part time at that university. It means they probably work outside of the university in a job related to the field they teach. Most cc professors at this. These professors dont earn benefits, and dont qualify to be tenured at the university after so long teaching.

How much does it cost to build a community college and suppy it withy faculty, teachers and administration?
Q. I need to know exact figures. I know that it is in the millions but how many millions? I need to also know a break down of how much each project will cost and does it typically come from tax payers money? Okay here are some variables that may help. The school is receiving no support locally or from the state. Taxpayers are not contributing. It will be big enough for 1000 students. It will contain only basic courses to fulfill GE requirements. Math, English, Science, and Arts and Humanities. There will be 40 course offerings, 10 per subject. No cafeteria, no bookstore, no theater.Faculty should not exceed 200 plus 40 teachers and there is no campus police. Rough estimate will do this is for an essay. Thanks.

A. Building might be $150/sq ft to build. Teachers...figure at least $50k a year in salary and another $15 or so in benefit cost...per teacher. Property costs? Well, that is really up for grabs. Heating and cooling?? figure $10k a month. Insurance? I have no idea. How big a building will you build? And, why aren't taxpayers supporting it?

Are university faculty entitled to discuss a student with other students?
Q. There is a new faculty member who seems to be a gossip-monger, and discusses students with others. Is there any protection for students? I'm not sure whether this falls under FERPA rules. So far, it's happened to me and a colleague. Most recently, this professor sent out an email to multiple faculty and students, naming my colleague as the source of a rumor she was supposedly dispelling. Of course, she did not hear it from him.

A. Doesn't sound like something that is supposed to be done. If the name of the student was left out, then I think it would be okay, but you cannot include the name of a student like that. Better find an authority to deal with this matter.

Can one incompetent and perfectionist professor destroy almost all faculty's reputation?
Q. What do you think about professor (and his course) which have such results from month to month, from year to year: About 75 - 99% students fail to pass exam. It's important to say that all that people don't have any problems with other courses & exams, and some of them are very good students even outstanding. Can we blame 400 students for such bad results, or the only problem is professor? It's also interesting to say, that professor after years & years of such results, still work at faculty without any consequences
Asked by Quick Jade - Fri Jul 17 09:30:02 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, one bad apple can spoil the whole bunch. Some people have one bad experience with a restaurant and NEVER go back. So, this looks like a problem: a faculty member whose teaches material and less than a fourth of the students pass the test, consistently, year after year. So, if something is going to be done, the students need to go to the professor's boss (dean? provost?) and say "this is a problem: we will go to other schools if we can't pass this course". The professor's boss will need to decide whether to help the professor teach better/differently, or move the professor into a different course, or something else. The professor's boss already knows about this problem, but hasn't yet gotten enough complaints at a loud enough… [cont.]

Why is the faculty at Montclair State University so bad?
Q. Especially the Computer Science department. The faculty don't help you register for classes or care weather you graduate at all. The professors give boring, monotonous lectures. They respond to questions with 10 minute lectures that don't provide answers. Is it this bad at every college? What keeps the department from being cut? What keeps the professors from being fired?
Asked by Freakazoid - Thu Aug 6 01:21:35 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. well, Montclair isn't the best university as far as universities go, which limits both their funding and attractiveness to very good professors. Very good ones go to the top universities where they get paid more. What keeps them from being cut is either tenure or any research or accomplishments they have made in the past.

How should I address faculty at my on-campus interview?
Q. Please only answer if you're already a faculty member. I have an upcoming on-campus interview at a research university. I am focused on presenting myself as a possible colleague to the faculty, so I'm trying to shed the graduate student mentality where faculty are Drs./ubermensch and graduate students are lowly untermensch. But I also recognize the need to be respectful. Addressing faculty as "Dr. so and so" would ensure I'm deferential, but also might make me appear as an unequal. Thoughts? Please, only answer if you're a faculty member.

A. I do not need to be a faculty member to answer as this information is usually learned in graduate school and the only additional information which would be provided by a faculty member would be personal and not applicable to anyone else. (I hold a non-academic doctorate and have spent eleven years on university campuses.) Faculty are initially addressed as Doctor if they hold that degree, as Professor if they hold that rank (or assistant or associate professor rank) and do not hold a doctorate, and otherwise as Mr. or Ms., unless they teach at one of the very snobby schools where they prefer always to be called Mr. or Ms. Another exception would be to address the faculty member as Dean, Provost, etc, if s/he holds such a rank which is… [cont.]

How do you go about a master's thesis whose output/focus is a faculty performance-based evaluation system?
Q. I am pursuing a MA degree in education. Ive read several thesis and several titles but it seems nothing inspires me. I am thinking of a faculty performance-based evaluation system for the school im working for. Can such system (output of thesis is a handbook) be made a thesis? What title can you suggest then?
Asked by ED LU - Mon Jul 30 04:37:16 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Sure, that sounds like an awesome idea. I think the theses that actually create something usable (in your case, a handbook with a new implementable system) are the coolest and the most fulfilling. (I'm getting my master's in a department where there's a lot of education emphasis, but I'm writing a theoretical thesis myself - my only research will consist of reading, no collecting of data or number-crunching.) Anyway, what do you mean by "faculty performance-based evaluation system"? Will this be the faculty evaluating each other? The students evaluating the faculty? Or will it be a standardized evaluation form for all professors in a department to use each semester? (I would focus on just one department - perhaps your education… [cont.]

Is it legal for universities to restrict the sale of properties near their campus to faculty/staff?
Q. Some houses near Stanford are restricted for sale only to faculty and high level staff. I would think this would violate the fair housing requirements. Here is an example listing that has this restriction. You may need to register to see it:
Asked by internetoverhead - Mon Jul 3 23:31:57 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The houses in question are on Stanford land. Hence, Stanford can impose rules on who lives in them. Note that if you buy one of these houses, you do not get a fee simple title: you get a leasehold -- Stanford retains ownership of the land.
