How do you rate hip hop compared to other genres?
Q. I know hip hop catches a lot of hate from fans of other genres, but how does it hold up against them with you as hip hop fans? Do you think hip hop has made the same contributions to music as rock/pop/country whatever? What's the highest placing you would give a rapper on a list of all time musical greats of any genre?
Asked by bonniethon (puirt a buel) - Mon Oct 19 16:49:30 2009 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Hip Hop is the baby of music. It has only existed since the 70's, and has been given a bad name for most of those years. Musical legends of other genres are fairly easy to find. The Beatles, Miles Davis, Bob Dylan, etc are artists your pretty much born knowing. Where as Chuck D, Ghostface, Rakim and Kool G Rap are artists you have to find on your own really. When people hear all of the one hit wonders on the radio, as well as all of the songs about sex, drugs, etc. They just say what the he'll is this? It's garbage. Which is partially their fault and partially the radios fault because they don't look hard enough and the radio plays the gabage that they are mistakenly calling Hip Hop. Anyway, if you look at hip hop as a lifestyle, and… [cont.]

What is the hip hop song that is currently out that begins with classical music?
Q. I've heard a hip hop/rap song that is a fairly new release and it begins with classical music. As the song continues it samples more of the classical music. I really want to know what this song is, but I have almost no details on it.

A. Yeah, I heard that too. I can't remember the name because after the classical music part was over, I turned it off. That was the best part.

What's the difference between hip-hop turntablism and experimental noise turntablism?
Q. The way I see it,I've seen and heard it all when it comes to DJs in hip-hop. Now,in turntablism, we all know the basics-scratching,mixing, backspinning, beat juggling, and the most advanced of all-body tricks. Turntablism has played a very important role in hip-hop. Today,I have came across something new,and that is experimental noise turntablism, which leads me to this question-what is the difference between hip-hop DJs and experimental noise DJs? I know that the hip-hop DJs scratch and mix for turntablist battles. As for experimental noise DJs, I would figure these DJs would mess up the mix and the song by making silly sounds on the turntables, just by fooling around with the records-and not doing a serious DJ mix. Noise music is something… [cont.]

Is hip hop dancing a good place to start for a beginner?
Q. I'm 18 and have had very little dance experience...is hip hop harder than other styles of dance? How easy is it to pick up the techniques and steps? I've seen some youtube videos of beginner classes and I also want to know how much content is typically in each class session as I think I'm slow at remembering steps. thanx!
Asked by tecknofobe - Thu Apr 16 08:29:13 2009 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments

A. I would think that hip hop dancing is mostly a do what you feel type of dancing...of course, you can learn some techniques to perfect what you already feel and want to do, but that's what sets hip hop dancing apart from other dance is the freedom and outlet it is for the untrained dancer...(when I say untrained, I am talking about, all of the formal training that ballet, jazz and tap dancers may have to endure)...Hip hop dancers just do what they do and make it look like its fun and easy, but I know that a very good looking routine takes a lot of practice and good choreography. Its like anything else, if you want to do it, just start. Take that first step and stop worrying so much about not doing it just right.

What is a mainstream hip hop song that you like? Even though you know it sucks?
Q. I know mainstream hip hop sucks so you dont have to tell me. But for some reason I like the song Out Her Grindin by dj kahled. I know it sucks & isn't lyrical or as good as old school hip hop but I like it. So do any of you like a song like that?

A. Young Jeezy may rhyme with the complexity of a five year old and the voice of a 90 year old crackhead, but most of his songs have a strong appeal.

What classic hip hop artists/groups do you think the majority of hip hoppers?
Q. Are not into at all? There are many classic hip hop artists/groups that are hailed by many, but in reality, no one really listens to their music, or either their music comes off as boring. I know ATCQ is one of these groups. They are a classic hip hop group, but come on. Most hip hop listeners, even the ones with good taste, don't bump their music on the regular. Who else is like this to you?

What is the difference between the hip hop skinny jean fashion to scene?
Q. Both have bright colors, tight jeans, tight shirts, bright shoes, and shirt styles. All I could see is the sagging skinny jeans, expensive kicks, and new era caps. My brother dresses like that, hip hop skinny jean lol but I think it looks more decent though than baggy jeans.

A. I'm going to be honest, if you're trying to dance, you're definitely starting off later than most people started who want to join intense hip-hop groups. That being said, it isn't unheard of of people working hard and joining those types of groups. You can definitely be good enough to join a group like that if you work hard. You need to go to a good dance studio specializing in hip-hop.(And you can tell how good they are by what there advanced classes look like). You need to practice constantly, get as many performances as you can, join a dance group (not a hard/intense one). For the next two years you are going to have to practice about every day and almost obsses over this. So, yes, you can do it, but you're going to have to work for… [cont.]

How can I become better at hip hop dance?
Q. So I just started taking hip hop dance for beginners last week, but I find it super hard to keep up. My dance instructor just does the moves without explaining them and she expects us to keep up and memorize them. I have pretty good memory, but sometimes the moves just don't come out right. They look awkward and unnatural. How can I look like I am actually hip hip dancing and not just moving around awkwardly?
Asked by Annie - Sun Jul 11 00:28:04 2010 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Find someone in the class who can break down some steps for you. I've never met a hip hop dancer who didn't want to help me learn what they do. And practice with them whenever possible. If the teacher ever breaks down any steps and teaches how to do it such as pops or the moonwalk for example, practice what she shows you every day for a certain amount of time. Also if she does any warm up routines that involve things like body isolations, practice those on your own at home daily as well. There are lots and lots of how to videos on youtube.com that I used for inspiration when I started doing hip hop a few years ago. Do searches for "how to pop and lock", "how to glide", etc. And besides practice and practice and practice, just don't quit!… [cont.]

What kind of hip hop would a stubborn metal head like?
Q. I can't stand the stuff, but I know it's naive to think the whole genre sucks. Mindless Self Indulgence is the only artist I like that even comes close to hip hop, but that's really stretching the definition. I'm normally a grindcore/mathcore fan.
