How are social issues different from economic issues?
Q. I have to answer this for class. However, I'm not sure what the right answer is. What I've come up with so far is that economic issues such as men and women receiving equal pay, are affected by social issues, such as society's view that a woman's work is less important. Any ideas?
Asked by Summer - Fri Oct 12 16:27:54 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. There are a lot of social issues which have no relation to economics at all, both at national levels of society, and at family levels. Social issues are more of the abstract type (which you can't show physically) but most of the economic issues are of the concrete type (which you can show physically). For example relegious fundamentalism. Religious fundamentalists don't quote any economic concerns. Their only point is the kind of belief in God. Simlarly at the level of a family, there could be a social issue due to economics involved, like living standards, who should work, etc. But sexual issues are not related to economics in the family. Similarly bringing up children with cultural values.

A. Economy...McCain has better ideas here. Cutting taxes has ALWAYS increased federal revenue, but the federal government has always spent the increase and more. McCain wants to cut taxes AND cut spending. Obama and Clinton want to increase taxes and spending. This will reduce federal revenue by cutting jobs, and will send the deficit out of control. War on terror. Hillary and Obama are either foolish enough to cut-n-run in Iraq, leaving Iran to overrun Iraq and cause mayhem in the middle east. More likely, they are just lying about cutting out, and would change their tune after the election. John McCain is telling the truth about Iraq. We need to finish the job of training and turning security over to Iraqis, and that will take… [cont.]

The only reason he ended the study early (it was supposed to run for 2 weeks) is because his girlfriend saw some videos of what was going on and threatened to leave him if he didn't end it immediately. It's a good question. How soon after you know that something is harmful to your participants do you need to end the study? How much harm is acceptable, if you think that the harm will be temporary? Would it have been ethical to keep the subjects for another week, and run the risk that things would have gotten really bad, since they could have intervened if anyone's safety was at risk? Should ethical issues in… [cont.]

A. Yes...trusting people seems to be an issue of children who had paranoid/SX parents; dealing with problems illogically, or coldly...SX has a genetic component, usually skipping a generation, so even though he does not manifest the SX diagnosis he has learned how to deal with one, out of survival. A. First, nothing in aviation is cheap or easy to implement. To get anything changed, first there has to be a NPRM (notice of proposed rule making) where the public has a chance to respond to (not including emergency rules), then a hearing on how the rule will be implemented, and to whom, and who may be exculded, then a benefit/cost analysis, then a meeting to address how these will be paid for, then a meeting with the FAA to get their feedback, then argued in court by the airlines because they dont want to incur any more costs that will take away from the bottom end, then the increased costs to passengers to recoup some of these new rules. But aside from this, there are a few things that could help, one is having more direct nav flights,… [cont.]

A. The United States presidential election of 1852 was in many ways a replay of the election of 1844. Once again, the incumbent President was a Whig who had succeeded to the presidency upon the death of his war hero predecessor; in this case, it was Millard Fillmore who followed General Zachary Taylor. The Whig party passed over the incumbent for nomination casting aside Fillmore in favor of General Winfield Scott. The Democrats nominated a "dark horse" candidate, this time Franklin Pierce. The Whigs again campaigned on the obscurity of the Democratic candidate, and once again this strategy failed. What is the biggest development issues in Indonesia right now?
Q. Would you say smoking prevalence and deforestation are the biggest developmental issues in Indonesia? I'd think so, since they don't seem to have any rules restricting children smoking, with all the news about the 2-year old smoking in Indonesia. And how about deforestation? Is poverty the reason why people still rely on mass cutting down of trees? Keep in mind the keyword, "developmental" issues :) - It might be more relevant if people living in Indonesia respond, but you're welcome to share your thoughts.

What moral issues do vets face when an animal is brougt in and the owner cannot afford the medical bills?

A. I think vets become somewhat emotionally detached, as do paramedics, doctors, and nurses, to be honest. I'm saying this because I saw a program about paramedics last night, and they even admitted being 'numb' and being able to detach themselves from a patient- if you got too attached, emotionally, you wouldn't be able to do the jobs. Vets are the same way. Caring? Yes. But not emotionally invovled. I don't think they become...blunt, as in 'I'm putting your animal to sleep, end of', but they don't feel so morally attached to the situation because you can't get emotionally involved like that. You can't do the work for free or cheaper, so it's not really a moral issue- it's just realistic. Things cost money- anesthetic, x-rays, surgery time- [cont.]

Q. What were the most important issues to be decided at the Constitutional Convention? What compromises got all sides to come together on those issues?

A. ... and what do you already have on the issue from looking up the convention? Just do an internet search for "US Constitution" and/or "Constitutional Convention", and you'll have your answers. The Wikipedia page, for example, will lead you quite directly to the Virginia Plan, the Bill of Rights, and the ratification criteria.

What will be the most important issues in a few years?
Q. I am only fifteen years old, and I have never found it too important to inform myself of important issues. However, I'm growing up and need to know these things now. Can someone please tell me what the most important issues will be in five to ten years and where I can learn more about them?
