My house needs second story to be livable what to do?
Q. I have a 1 1/2 story house, what is the cheapest way the get the room upstairs livable, build the story up or a shed roof? What should I do? There is an addition tied to the roof that makes the kitchen longer I want the most living space out of my second story.

A. Why can you not make a liveable space in the upper floor. I live in a 1 1/2 story and we have livable space there. You just need to put the essintals...insulations, wallboard, flooring, and hvac. If you need more floor space...maybe consider doing a dormer on the front or back side so you can push out the walls of the rooms.

Does each unit have to be livable to qualify for a FHA Mortgage?
Q. I am interested in a foreclosed 4 family, but one of the units is missing kitchen cabinets and a sink. Will I be able to get a FHA loan for this? Does each unit have to be "livable" in order to qualify for FHA? Or is it ok if I just say I am only using 3 units?

What are the most livable planets other than Earth and Mars?
Q. I'm writing a speech about meeting an alien, and I need to know what planet would be the most livable for an alien. (Please explain why)
Asked by Me!!! - Sat Feb 28 22:25:27 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. An alien could come from any planet - alien lifeforms do not have to be humanoid, they could come from an icy planet like Neptune, or a hot one like Venus, or something else entirely. An alien could be from the moon of a gas giant (like Saturn's moon Titan or Jupiter's moon Europa).

A. Build a 15ft privacy wall around your house, grow a 15-foot privacy hedge or get all you friends to volunteer and help clean up the neighborhood.

How can I make my windowless classroom more livable?
Q. I'm a middle school teacher and have a fairly large and well-equipped science lab, the one drawback is that it does not have any windows. It has two doors that lead into hallways that do not have windows for at least 15 feet. I'm going to get some plant lights to at least bring in some air filtering plants.
Asked by doublewidemama - Sun Jun 13 11:06:22 2010 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Definitely spider plants! I once worked in a chem lab facility, and everyone had spider plants. :-) I would also suggest (if you can swing it) a fairly bright paint for the walls, something warm, like amber, yellow, pumpkin, russet brown, and coral. (Low or no VOC paint doesn't smell, so you won't knock everyone dead with fumes.) Combine the warm paint and (existing) fluorescent lights, plant lights, and some regular incandescents and I bet it will look much nicer. The plants will add a nice touch; you could take the same green as the plants and incorporate that, too...trim on the ends of the chem benches, or the stool seats or something. I don't know how much latitude you have; you might be able to move the benches and chairs in kind… [cont.]

Q. What is the correct way to seal and cover basement walls to make the area livable?
Asked by Rebecca C - Sun Apr 27 12:21:19 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Several options. You can attach 2x4's to the wall, insulate between them with extruded polystyrene (styrofoam), and drywall over them. Another option is to build a 2x4 wall in front of the concrete wall, insulate with R-13, and drywall over it. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. If you don't care about a finished appearance, and just want to have a rec area, you can either do nothing (the walls don't NEED to be sealed) or paint the walls. Hope this helps.

What do i need to make empty plot of land livable?
Q. Ok i am looking at an empty plot of land, and it has never been lived on before. Its brushed in and huge trees everywhere! I know i need stuff like brushing, trees down, septic tank, source of water... but i was wondering if there was a guide or something to help me? My plan is to move a small trailer on here, then build a house, or preferably a cabin. any thoughts?
Asked by hupababy83 - Fri Mar 19 15:10:01 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Before making too many plans, you need to find out if you will be allowed to get permits for a driveway and building. You should check out the zoning...things like that. If you can build on the land, then you will need to contact your electric company to arrange a site plan to bring in electricity once you know and mark out your building site ensuring proper distances will be kept between septic bed and well areas..but...you will need to find out if you can place a trailer on the land as there are many places around my area that will not allow this. Just be sure you can do what you want to do on this land before purchasing it.

How do enzymes allow chemical reactions to take place at livable temperatures?
Q. it would be awesome to have an answer to this question.
Asked by Summer H - Fri Jun 12 10:24:49 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Chemical reactions are often unlikely to occur unless given the right conditions. Two really important conditions are pH and the physical arrangement of the molecules or atoms that are being reacted. The active sites of enzymes (the place where the reactions occur) are often shaped in a way to facilitate the reaction and they often contain amino acid side chains that make the pH in the active site ideal for the reaction.

what would the atmospheric pressure be if with earth's was covered with water? Is a livable environment?
Q. If the Earth were covered with water as in the Noah story of the Bible, what would the atmosphere be like? Would an increased water surface are create so much moisture that it wouldn't support human life?
Asked by hamsterpolice - Sun Mar 4 20:49:21 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. To the middle eastern human writers of the Bible the whole world (or the whole earth, depending on the version) was the Tigris and Euphrates valley and surrounds. It was flooded when the Black Sea became overloaded with water and spilled off to the south. Since they knew nothing else they considered it as covering the entire world. Anyway, the air pressure probably would not differ much from today. Humidity would probably be 100 percent much more often, but it would likely be livable (terrariums can approach that humidity and there is no real difficulty sustaining life in them).

How much money is considered a "livable" wage?
Q. How much money does one person need to live on their own?
Asked by Chocolate D - Wed Sep 24 19:39:24 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. According to the government its minimum wage ($7.95/ hr here in Oregon). Realistically no less than $9/ hr at full time, if the person has no debts and minimal expenses. It also depends on your location because what someone can live on here on the Oregon Coast is going to be alot less than what someone can live on in Las Vegas.

A. Best to live? Probably Canada, the Netherlands or Denmark. All three countries consistently score high on the "Standard of Living" charts and all four hold top-10 positions on Forbes' "World's Happiest Places" list. The cities all sound like they're in tip-top shape, and what Netherlands and Denmark have for interesting culture and architecture, Canada makes up for in natural beauty across the entire nation. So yeah, I'm going with those three. =]

Q. Okay Einstein, can you elaborate on that please? Spanky...er...Lawrence, how about you?
Asked by Santa Fe - Fri Jan 2 07:05:18 2009 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Absolutely, The way you achieve livable wages is to cut the tax rate by, o lets say, 80%. More money for investors, more jobs. Hell I net over 1000 per year running my business, if I had another employee I could just about double that in two years, but it is just two cost prohibitive right now. As such it is not worth it at this time so another person is out a great "living wage job" due to taxes, levies, surcharges, mandates... Just think, you, your son or daughter, nieces or nephews could work for me if I did not have to pay all those well intentioned taxes.

I want to buy a home with no money down but would need additional money from the loan to make it livable?
Q. I am a single parent in Minnesota with a steady full-time job but mediocre credit (thanks to the ex) The only house in my area I can afford needs all new flooring, paint and drywall repairs. How can I get a loan for 10K more than the purchase price so that I can fix it up to live in? FYI: It is is a duplex and TAX assessed at $160K. Others in the neighborhood are (not) selling at $160-170 but this is so filthy and vandalized inside it's listed at $143K, "as-is." Just thought if I could get the unit for $125K and put $10K in to it, I'd be set! A loan for $165 would be a payment (with stupid $150 Assn dues) of $1400-- I can't do that, but am paying $1000/mo now to RENT! So the loan of $140-ish is easily doable and I'd be doing the… [cont.]

A. You will need to now if the home will appraise for more. Lets say they want 80k but it'll appraise for 90k. Offer 90k and ask for 10k back from the seller at closing. This is really the only way to get that money back.

Q. How do they work out that somewhere is the most 'livable' country or city?
Asked by Alisha - Wed Jul 29 07:20:52 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Sometimes they use statistics such as how much money is spent on education per resident, or crime rates. Sometimes they use scientific data such as air quality. Sometimes they use surveys asking people what they think about their city. It really depends on who "they" are and what they are trying to show. There are many factors to consider and some of "them" only consider the factors that prove what they want to prove. I'm sure someone could prove that Detroit is the best place to live. Figures don't lie but liars figure.
