What does an employee have to pay back if they were double paid?
Q. We learned that our payroll clerk paid herself an additional paycheck. We immediately terminated the employee of course. But since she already cashed the check and it's a new quarter, we can't void the check. My question is, is she only liable to pay back the net amount of money that she received? Is she responsible to pay back the employer taxes and workmans comp?
Asked by StaciaC - Mon Apr 20 16:46:06 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. She would be liable for the entire portion of her pay she recieved. You would have to adjust your tax payments to the IRS. But, I would make her pay any administrative costs. You have leverage with herr.

What happens if I paid off my entire student loan but they still applied my tax rebate to it?
Q. I paid off my entire defaulted student loan at the beginning of this month. I even received a paid in full letter. But today I just got a letter from the IRS that my $600 was applied to that loan by offset!! Apparently there wasn't enough time between when I paid off the loan and then getting my rebate. I just tried to call the Missouri Department of Education, which my loan is through, but they are closed for the day. Does anyone know if I can get my $600 back??? :(

A. You are going to have to contact FMS, or the Financial Management Service. They are the ones that actually collected the money from your tax rebate. (800) 304-3107 If you can provide proof to them, they should be able to get your money back to you, if they haven't already forwarded the money to the State of Missouri

How to get paid on eHow if you're not US resident?
Q. There's written that if you want to get paid for your written articles, you must be a U.S resident, age 18 or older with valid tax payer identification. But what to do if you want to get paid and you're not a US resident and also don't have any tax payer identification? Is there any way? I thought - maybe you know more websites which pay for articles, but you don't must be a US resident? There's more people than Americans who wants to earn money online by writing articles!
Asked by stilinga - Fri Jul 4 04:45:34 2008 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments

A. If they limit payment to US residents then you are not eligible to be paid by them. There are ways that US companies can pay non-resident aliens, however some companies don't want to be bothered with the record keeping requirements involved. If they choose to do business that way there's nothing that you can do to change that. eHow's position on this is quite clear and is explained in their FAQ: Q. I am not a citizen or legal resident of the United States, but I do have a PayPal email address. Can I be paid? A. No. The Writer's Compensation Program is not available for non-US citizens or non-US residents at this time. Here's a link to the FAQ:

How do I go about filing Taxes if I am paid by cash?
Q. I am going to start getting paid for housecleaning and childcare fo a woman and her children and she will be paying me by either cash or check. I want to be able to get financial aid so I would need to have an income tax return. How can I file for taxes? Is it a one time thing around tax time or do I need to pay taxes everytime I get paid? I will not get paid much, and I have a child, would I have to pay a lot of taxes?
Asked by mad4fashion - Wed Oct 24 22:08:27 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Great question and congratulations on becoming "self employed"! In essence you will be a "business owner". What you will need to do is to track all of the income you receive. Purchase an inexpensive journal to do this and if you have a bank account, I would deposit all the cash and checks into this account for tracking purposes. You will also need to know if the woman that you will be working for is planning to deduct the amount she pays you for child care on her taxes. If she will, she most likely will need to issue you what is called a "1099" which is the form the IRS requires a person to provide at the end of the year to people that they pay on an independent contract basis. The long and the short of it is this. At the end of the year, [cont.]

How does a realtor get paid when finding a renter or a lease purchaser?
Q. I have my property listed and my realtor is mostly getting calls from people who want to do a lease purchase or rent my home. I am thinking about doing it because I am moving out of state and can't until I unload my house. I first wanted to know how does my realtor get paid if she finds a renter or a lease purchaser? Do I pay her monthly or do I pay her commission up front for finding them?
Asked by chocolatebabycakes - Sun Nov 18 18:29:28 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If they buy then the realtor gets straight commision a one time deal, but if someone rents then I believe the realtor gets a little each month until they get their commission cost in full from you unless you can pay them up front if you can afford it. But if I were you I would sell your house on your own, for sale by owner, google it. My girlfriends mom did that and she sold it in 3 weeks as opposed to the previous realtor she had trying to sell the house for about 6 months. Put it in the paper even.

How are designers paid for their work?
Q. I am looking to open an online invitation store. I would like to have freelance designers create unique invitation designs for me. This is something where I would be using their design over and over in the future for customers. Are designers typically paid a one time fee for this sort of work, or do I have to pay a licensing fee/royalty? For instance, they get a cut of profits every time their design is sold? Any insight appreciated. Thanks.
Asked by dorigen - Mon Jan 21 15:48:00 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Depends on the artist. He/She may want a one time fee for their work and a little extra to cover reproduction rights. Or they may want a percentage. This come down between you and the artist in contractual agreement. Individual Artist have different Ideas approaches when selling, creating, and licensing their work. It all comes down to the contract.

Money paid on behalf of me by my employer to cover relocation expenses. How is it taxable?
Q. I moved for my employer in Jan of 07 from IL to NC. At that time. I received a lump sum payment to cover travel and moving expenses along with expenses in relation to the sale of my home in IL. All of this money was added to my paystub so that I could be taxed on it. Fine. My employer also added additional money in to cover the federal and state taxes that I would be liable for. My problem is with social security taxes. I have only earned $40,000 so far this year (my paystub shows $87k because of all of the relocation expenses) yet I've paid out close to $5k in SS taxes. I am salaried and paid twice a month. This past pay period my employer took out over 16% of my wages for social security taxes. Apparently, I'm liable for 6.2% up to… [cont.]

A. If you are on an H1B visa, you pay all taxes. If you are still a non-resident AND on an F-1 or J-1 visa, you don't pay fica (SS) or medicare. You are still liable for the federal and state taxes unless a treay applies. Tax treaties normally only apply to the federal return. See IRS publication 519.

How can owning a paid off townhouse help me buy a house?
Q. I live in a San Diego suburb where prices are falling. My husband and I will have our 1700 square feet townhouse paid off in a few months. We are planning to have a baby soon, but would like to buy a single family home (with a yard!) within 6 years for our future family. We only have about $50,000 in savings to use as a down payment, could we still buy a home in a few years if they prices are a lot lower? We will own our townhouse outright and have no other loans (equity, car, etc.). We also have nearly perfect credit. We are planning to rent out our townhouse and put that money towards the new home loan. How can owning a paid off townhouse help me buy or qualify for a house?
Asked by jenny c - Mon Sep 25 14:22:57 2006 - - 17 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The question I have is, "What is your goal for owning the townhouse?" If it's for the income stream, then keep it. If it's not, then evaluate it for its usefulness in your overall goals. It may be better just to sell it and apply the money from the sale to the purchase of the house you think you want to move to. Another way you could use it to acquire the house you plan on living in is to remortgage it for enough money to make the down payment you may need on the house, or borrow the entire amount for the second place, assuming the townhouse is the more valuable of the two. This would allow you to buy the second place outright and leave your debt in place on the rental property. If you can show that rental income from the townhouse… [cont.]

Can you deduct interest paid on federal student loans on your taxes? If so up to how much?
Q. I have a federal student loan from Sallie Mae for around 20,000 dollars. I have accrued interest on it of about 2,000. I was just wondering if interest paid on my loan is eligible for tax deduction? If it is up to how much and if my interest paid covers more than the taxes I owe do I get the remainder of it in my tax refund?
Asked by Ray M - Wed Feb 20 12:03:49 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You can't write off accrued interest. You can only write off the interest that you paid. If you are still a student you probably aren't making any payments on your loans. You will get a 1098-E in the mail from any student loans you have and that amount is what you can write off, up to $2500 this year. It's a front page deduction which means it is deducted dollar for dollar from your income. This will make your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) smaller and therefore your tax obligation a bit less.

How will I be paid if my company offers holiday pay and then asks me to come in to work on the holiday?
Q. My company offers holiday pay for the major holidays of the year. Occasionally, I am asked to work an hour or two on those holidays. The employee handbook states that we will be paid double time if we work on a holiday. Does that mean that I will receive the holiday pay (at standard pay) plus double time for the hour or two that I work making my pay for the one or two hours essentially triple time?

A. In France, people have 5 weeks of paid vacation per year. This is a law and the companies are forced to pay the employees, even during holiday.

Can dividend paid be shown as current asset in balance sheet?
Q. While preparing a balance sheet, where do we show the interim dividend paid? To make it clear, it is half yearly profit paid by the company to the share holders.
Asked by Curious - Tue Dec 23 02:31:35 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No. Its PAID. Current assets are generally expected receivable within one year. According to IFRS, dividend paid is shown in the P&L & statement of changes in equity, not in Balance Sheet. When dividend is paid, it reduced the distributable reserves ie your retained profit. The statement of changes in equity (aka statement of retained earnings) basically show the movement of capital & reserves during the financial year. Anyway, perhaps can you clarify further, is the dividend paid by your co or to your co. My answer assume its paid by your co. Either way, it could not be shown in the balance sheet. A. If it does not clear the system by the end of the business day on the day you paid it I would contact the clerk of the court of the county where the fine was assessed. Chances are that your payment method was declined for some reason. Oh, and as a side note: This will not be a defense in court. You can not say "Well I paid it, but I guess it did not go through" unless you have a receipt in hand you will be considered late on your payment and open to additional fines or jail time. Always print out a confirmation when paying online.

Is Obama getting paid for all the work he's doing now, or does he not start being paid until he's inaugurated?
Q. Obama is working full-time and more getting briefed, planning and traveling for his job as president. I've always assumed that presidents don't start being paid until they're inaugurated and take office, but now I'm wondering. Is Obama being paid for all this work he's doing and all the expenses of traveling around? Or is this coming out of his own pocket? When does he actually start getting paid?

A. That shows his dedication and seriousness to get things done. I admire him. He is intense, isn't he? We need a person like that for these tough times. No, I don't think he gets paid until Jan 20th. All of this is out of pocket - but he gets paid as an Ill Senator anyway. Plus Michelle makes a bundle as a lawyer. But then, these are pittans compared to what he will make later and what he is worth. It is petty to think that he will be compensated for him being a president-in-waiting. He deserves it if he gets paid.

Q. I was just wondering what are the best paid jobs after leaving university and what are the best paid degrees?
Asked by Eoin W - Mon Mar 23 16:52:20 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The top-paying field is definitely medicine. Within the medical field, the most paid are cardiovascular surgeons, followed by neurosurgeons, vascular surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, radiologists, plastic surgeons, cardiologists, colorectal surgeons, gastroenterologists, and urologists. The best-paid jobs after leaving university and receiving a bachelor's degree will depend heavily on your major. A graduate from the same university with a bachelor's degree in anthropology will have different opportunities than someone with a degree in biology, for example.
