How does Paid time off work for salary employees?
Q. This is our first time having a salary employee. How is a PTO day worked out for a salary employee? In addition we pay any unused PTO to our hourly employees at the end of the year into their bonus. How would this work for a salary employee? It should be noted that this salary employee has 1/2 of his entire familys health insurance premium paid, where as we only pay 1/2 of the individual employees health insurance on hourly workers.

A. At my company, PTO days are used the same for hourly employees as salaried employees. My company also pays any unused PTO at the end of the year which is the same for hourly and salaried employees. Edit - Here is a website that has some good information.

What taxes need to be paid on a lawsuit settlement?
Q. I need to come up with a figure regarding a settlement with an insurance company because of a permanent debilitating injury to myself. The question is about how much I should expect to pay in taxes. (If it matters, I live in the state of Pennsylvania, in Pittsburgh.) If I am looking to have somewhere between $1 and $5million in my pocket (well, bank) after the lawyer gets 40%, what should I take into consideration for taxes? Are taxes paid before or after the lawyer? What I'm looking for is pretty much "If you get $1 million, they would have to pay x, if you get $5 million, they would have to pay y, etc." Also, if you know anything about the subject, please let me know if you think that I'm asking for too much or too little. A. You may be able to avoid paying any taxes on the settlement. We have a client who had a settlement for injuries suffered in a automobile accident, and has lingering medical issues. We have said that his settlement is being held aside to pay for future medical issues. The client isn't being taxed on the settlement, but also can't deduct any medical expenses related to the accident, until the settlement amount is totally used up. His settlement though was nowhere near your amount. To bolster your case I would ask your doctor how much does he/she think that your future medical bills will be, and set that amount aside to pay for future medical expenses. Check out Revenue Ruling 75-232, 1975-1 CB 94, IRC Section 213. Don't know how… [cont.]

What does an employee have to pay back if they were double paid?
Q. We learned that our payroll clerk paid herself an additional paycheck. We immediately terminated the employee of course. But since she already cashed the check and it's a new quarter, we can't void the check. My question is, is she only liable to pay back the net amount of money that she received? Is she responsible to pay back the employer taxes and workmans comp?

A. She would be liable for the entire portion of her pay she recieved. You would have to adjust your tax payments to the IRS. But, I would make her pay any administrative costs. You have leverage with herr.

What happens if I paid off my entire student loan but they still applied my tax rebate to it?
Q. I paid off my entire defaulted student loan at the beginning of this month. I even received a paid in full letter. But today I just got a letter from the IRS that my $600 was applied to that loan by offset!! Apparently there wasn't enough time between when I paid off the loan and then getting my rebate. I just tried to call the Missouri Department of Education, which my loan is through, but they are closed for the day. Does anyone know if I can get my $600 back??? :(

A. You are going to have to contact FMS, or the Financial Management Service. They are the ones that actually collected the money from your tax rebate. (800) 304-3107 If you can provide proof to them, they should be able to get your money back to you, if they haven't already forwarded the money to the State of Missouri

How do I go about filing Taxes if I am paid by cash?
Q. I am going to start getting paid for housecleaning and childcare fo a woman and her children and she will be paying me by either cash or check. I want to be able to get financial aid so I would need to have an income tax return. How can I file for taxes? Is it a one time thing around tax time or do I need to pay taxes everytime I get paid? I will not get paid much, and I have a child, would I have to pay a lot of taxes?

A. Great question and congratulations on becoming "self employed"! In essence you will be a "business owner". What you will need to do is to track all of the income you receive. Purchase an inexpensive journal to do this and if you have a bank account, I would deposit all the cash and checks into this account for tracking purposes. You will also need to know if the woman that you will be working for is planning to deduct the amount she pays you for child care on her taxes. If she will, she most likely will need to issue you what is called a "1099" which is the form the IRS requires a person to provide at the end of the year to people that they pay on an independent contract basis. The long and the short of it is this. At the end of the year, [cont.]

I have several paid up credit cards I want to close out, how will this affect my credit score?
Q. I am working on paying off my credit cards because I am planning to retire in 3 to 5 years. Is it ok to close out these paid up cards all at one time or does it matter?
Asked by monicamellish - Fri Nov 2 15:44:52 2007 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Your score is based in part on the percentage of your available credit you have used. Closing paid off cards reduces the amount of credit you have available to you and will therefore lower your credit score some. But that may not matter if your other balances are low (and you are still using less than 10% of your remaining available credit) and you won't be applying for a mortgage anytime soon.

How does a realtor get paid when finding a renter or a lease purchaser?
Q. I have my property listed and my realtor is mostly getting calls from people who want to do a lease purchase or rent my home. I am thinking about doing it because I am moving out of state and can't until I unload my house. I first wanted to know how does my realtor get paid if she finds a renter or a lease purchaser? Do I pay her monthly or do I pay her commission up front for finding them?
Asked by chocolatebabycakes - Sun Nov 18 18:29:28 2007 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If they buy then the realtor gets straight commision a one time deal, but if someone rents then I believe the realtor gets a little each month until they get their commission cost in full from you unless you can pay them up front if you can afford it. But if I were you I would sell your house on your own, for sale by owner, google it. My girlfriends mom did that and she sold it in 3 weeks as opposed to the previous realtor she had trying to sell the house for about 6 months. Put it in the paper even.

Asked by Brokenhearted - Wed Jan 7 18:07:47 2009 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Most of what you're seeing and looking at and for are scams. No, you cannot get paid $200 (or $100, or $50, or $10) a day just by entering some information. There's even a poster here who's promoting these online surveys and at least she's providing links to actual checks she's received. (The fine print reveals she gets paid extra by those companies for posting those checks online.) Still, they're for small amounts of money--like $30 a month. You're a college student. You're a smart kid. Figure out something people really will be willing to pay you for. One caution: It's difficult to make "easy money." Extra: Yes. Even good money: Yes. But "easy money"? Very, very rare. Oh, and never pay an up-front registration fee. Never.

A. If you are on an H1B visa, you pay all taxes. If you are still a non-resident AND on an F-1 or J-1 visa, you don't pay fica (SS) or medicare. You are still liable for the federal and state taxes unless a treay applies. Tax treaties normally only apply to the federal return. See IRS publication 519.

A. People in the developing world need people with practical expertise that can help them get jobs to sustain their families and build their own capabilities to improve their lives. They need people who are *highly* skilled, not just people who want to help and have good hearts. Here is a web site that can help you learn more about the skills and experience desired by organizations that place highly-skilled volunteers in the developing world but do not charge those volunteers a fee, and how you can start to gain such experience locally, wherever you are right now. Most international hires for the UN require people with Master's Degrees and a fluency in a UN language in addition to English (Russian, Spanish, French, Arabic, or Chinese),… [cont.]

Money paid on behalf of me by my employer to cover relocation expenses. How is it taxable?
Q. I moved for my employer in Jan of 07 from IL to NC. At that time. I received a lump sum payment to cover travel and moving expenses along with expenses in relation to the sale of my home in IL. All of this money was added to my paystub so that I could be taxed on it. Fine. My employer also added additional money in to cover the federal and state taxes that I would be liable for. My problem is with social security taxes. I have only earned $40,000 so far this year (my paystub shows $87k because of all of the relocation expenses) yet I've paid out close to $5k in SS taxes. I am salaried and paid twice a month. This past pay period my employer took out over 16% of my wages for social security taxes. Apparently, I'm liable for 6.2% up to… [cont.]

Can you deduct interest paid on federal student loans on your taxes? If so up to how much?
Q. I have a federal student loan from Sallie Mae for around 20,000 dollars. I have accrued interest on it of about 2,000. I was just wondering if interest paid on my loan is eligible for tax deduction? If it is up to how much and if my interest paid covers more than the taxes I owe do I get the remainder of it in my tax refund?
Asked by Ray M - Wed Feb 20 12:03:49 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You can't write off accrued interest. You can only write off the interest that you paid. If you are still a student you probably aren't making any payments on your loans. You will get a 1098-E in the mail from any student loans you have and that amount is what you can write off, up to $2500 this year. It's a front page deduction which means it is deducted dollar for dollar from your income. This will make your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) smaller and therefore your tax obligation a bit less.

A. Athletes get an appearance fee and then extra if they win. They are not salaried which is why sponsorship and government grants are so important. They may also qualify for allowances from the AA but, again, these are small amounts. Most athletes starting out will have an agent. If they are good they will send be signed to a management company to look after endoresments, contracts, appearances, etc. But you have to be good, showing real potential and star quality. Again though you won't be salaried - think of an athelite as being self employed. Most atheletes starting out have other jobs to support themselves untill they can get sufficient sponsorship. And most, from what I know, don't go into athletics for the money but for the love of… [cont.]
