It deals with all aspects of this, including not only the collection, analysis and interpretation of such data, but also the planning of the collection of data, in terms of the design of surveys and experiments. A statistician is someone who is particularly versed in the ways of thinking necessary for the successful application of statistical analysis. Often such people have gained this experience after starting work in any of a list of fields of application of statistics. There is also a discipline called mathematical statistics, which is concerned with the theoretical basis of the subject. The word statistics can either be singular or plural. In its singular form, statistics refers to the mathematical science discussed in this article. In its plural form, statistics is the plural of the word statistic, which refers to a quantity (such as a mean) calculated from a set of data. From Wikipedia under the

In statistical analysis, Is it appropriate to use averages when computing correlations? Should individual data be subject to the average of a group? I appreciate any insight on this. Asked by B. C - Wed Feb 27 17:31:18 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Your question is a bit vague. You need to use averages so that you can calculate the variance and covariance for finding the correlation. If you are looking at the correlation of one set of averages vs. another set that is fine as long as you are doing it in such a way that each average is a independent sample from a population. The correlation coefficient, r, is a measure of the linear relationship between two variables. If the data is non-linear then the correlation coefficient is meaningless. r takes on values between -1 and 1. negative values indicate the relationship between the variables is indirect, i.e., on a scatter plot the data tends to have a negative slope. Positive values for r indicate the data tends to have a… [cont.] Answered by Merlyn - Wed Feb 27 19:05:57 2008 What statistical hypothesis test would i use to prove/disprove relationship between tempurature and cell resp? Q. I just finished an experiment in which i was testing the effects of temperature on the rate of cellular respiration. its obvious from my results that as temperature increased, so does the rate. My results are not enough though and i need to use a statistical analysis test to prove the existence or non-existence of a relationship. What test do I use and can you help me start of? Chi Squares? Students T - Test? Correlation? Which one and why? Asked by Manny - Tue Dec 15 02:50:51 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Correlation. Because that looks to see if higher values of one measure are associated with higher values of another measure. Q. I am thinking of registering Statistical Mechanics this semester in my master's level. Can you please suggest me how much difficult this course would be. I have background in Statistics but not that much background in physics courses like quantum mechanics. Asked by Anu - Fri Jan 16 22:44:24 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. A graduate level course in QM is usually prerequisite to graduate level stat mech. They'll assume, for example, that you are intimately familiar with all the quantum energy levels available to a particle in a gas or a particle-in-a-box or a harmonic oscillator or a spin-1/2 system. If those terms vaguely ring a bell for you, you should review them before starting. If you haven't heard of them, don't bother with stat mech--go back and take quantum. Also, it is good (if not absolutely necessary) to have had an undergraduate stat mech course. The graduate course starts from the beginning, but moves very quickly through material most students will already have seen as undergrads.
