How wise is moving from RI to Florida just because the weather?
Q. Me and my wife have stables jobs in RI, own our house, and in general we feel good about RI. The problem is that we can t stand the cold anymore. We just visit Florida and we loved to feel a weather of 76 degrees in December. Do you think that is wise to move to Florida just because of the weather?
Asked by Relic - Sun Jan 4 10:16:57 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I kind of feel like an expert on this subject because I have four friends who moved to Florida from PA and one from Indiana and they all moved back because they couldn't deal with Florida. I was just visiting Sanibel, FL last month and said to my SO we need to figure out how to move here. Here are the things I will stress as important. Florida is nothing like the Northeast. Seems obvious right, no snow, no cold, no ski resorts. Its also almost an entire state of non natives, many people who move there want to escape from some where else. Florida is a state of mind. It is more casual, less formal and filled with old people. The question you really need to answer is how often would I want to go back to RI? Every one I know who left… [cont.]

Is it wise to consider becoming a teacher in California despite all the lay offs?
Q. I've always wanted to be a teacher but I'm not so sure if I should go into teaching anymore because I want to have job stability. I'm not sure about teaching because of all the teachers being laid off. I want to be a math teacher. Is it wise to consider teaching or should I consider a different career?
Asked by GG - Wed Sep 9 11:45:09 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. All professions are shaky right now, so don't let that be a deterrent. Teaching is a very noble profession. And there is always a shortage of teachers in math and the sciences. I have worked with many student interns, and whenever they asked me about career advice or job shortages, I always tell them the same thing: Don't worry about the competition for jobs or how many jobs are out there. Just believe there is one job that you are perfectly suited for and it is out there waiting for you!

Is it wise to pay for European hostels online and in advance?
Q. Im planning on backpacking through Europe for 60-90 days and wondered is it really a good idea to pay online for hostel reservations in advance? I read other posts saying that its wise to to pay a percentage but all the online sites that ive browsed through require full payment. Has anyone had bad experiences using this method?

A. I've only good experiences booking hostels online with established booking agents. The only time I turned up and the place didn't honour my reservation was when I booked directly with a hotel via email. There's a few online hostel sites. This one is pretty good:

Is it wise to turn window fans so they're blowing OUT during days when you know it is going to be hot?
Q. Have an apartment, top floor, not allowed to have ac because the house is poorly wired and they would trip the circuit too often. I have 3 ceiling fans, all running counter clock wise and a fan for every window blowing cool air in at night. During the day, is it wise to have the fans sucking any hot air that rises out or am i simply blowing out all the cool air from the night before? Is it better to just shut off all fans during the day and have nothing running?
Asked by nicholashcanale - Wed May 26 21:07:42 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You could try keeping the night air in with out the fans in the mornings. It will be hot before noon. Then if you have a window, like on the south side and a window on the north side lined up with each other , a fan pulling air in from out side in the south window and in the north window a fan pulling the air from in side to go out side. That will move the air through good during the day. It would be best to try all ways.

How wise is to carry on investing in Insurance Retirement Plan?
Q. I have taken up an enrichment policy 3 yrs back. In the present market scenario how wise is to keep paying premium for 15 yrs more? Or is it better to surrender it and invest it in other avenues like Real estate? Your opinion please.
Asked by sark299 - Mon Jul 21 03:54:23 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Since you don't state the Insurance Company (and "Enrichment policy" gives 1,430 'hits' in google) I can't be bothered to track it down and find out how well it's performing .. Pension Plans are long term (25 years) .. right now the market is depressed so any 'transfer value' is likley to be quite low .. However you MIGHT be better off transferring into another scheme, especially since it would seem you do not have an actual Pension (which would get Tax Relief at your marginal rate) but rather some sort of 'Insurance' policy (which typically attracts high charges) .. if 10,000's are involved you need to speak to an IFA (Independent Financial Adviser)

How wise is it to take out a college loan?
Q. I have three choices. One is go to CSU Fullerton, which is affordable. In that case, I could live at home and not have to take out any loans. Or, I could go to Santa Monica College in Los Angeles. I wouldn't have to take out any loans either, but I would have to get an apartment, so it's a bit more expensive. Or I could go to Richmond, the American Int'l University in London. This option is approx. $40,000 US dollars a year, and I would have to take it all out with loans. I would absolutely love to go to the school in London, but is it wise to make such a commitment for repayment? The length is a 30 year term, so I would be like 50 or something by the time it is all paid off.
Asked by jadore - Fri Apr 6 00:43:59 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Ok, how about a compromise? Why not take your first two years at CSU and save up some money that you won't be using on apartments and tuition and put it towards your last two years in London? If you can take your general education requirements close to home inexpensively and transfer them in your junior year it makes excellent sense to put off borrowing as long as possible and cutting down both the amount to be repaid and the length of time it takes to repay it. This is a case where you should be talking to admissions counselors and transfer counselors at both schools before you make any decisions without all the right answers.

Q. So, what's the final purpose of people's life in this world? To be wise, to understand life, or to be rich, to attract others attention?

A. I would want to be wise because when others ask you for advice, you would be able to help them. I believe that wisdom is a type of wealth. Helping others and leaving this world a better place than when you found it is the purpose of life.

A. Not wise at all. It is never safe to travel alone. Especially in foreign lands. Its bad enough here in the states, let alone other countries where language is a barrier. May I advise instead, to plan this out over a long period of time, see if you can gather 2 or 3 more people with different langauge skills that want to do the same.

Is it wise to have an investment account and pay the taxes?
Q. I am currently maxing out my roth ira per year. I am also contributing to an individual investment account investing in more mutual funds. Is this a wise decision? What are the tax implications on my investment account. I know that my ROTH is tax-free but am not sure on what are some of the tax rules for the investment account. Thanks in advance.
Asked by llckll - Mon Sep 28 09:28:06 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The advantage of a taxable account is that you can take money out any time before age 59 1/2 or before you retire, without the ten percent penalty. You will have to pay taxes on the capital gains though. When you sell your mutual fund shares though you will have to pay taxes on the gain. A disadvantage of a taxable account is capital gains distributions at the end of the year. This is the gain from stocks the fund has sold during the year. Those distributions are taxable to you.

Q. I have heard that you can install windows onto a macbook using bootcamp. If so is it wise to install Autocad on this partition and use the mac os x for all other computer related work. I don't think autocad is apple compatible unless you install windows onto it.

A. Is it wise I do not know, but I work full time with autocad architectural desktop. At home I have a mac book pro and have parallels installed where I can run windows xp simultaneously. I have autocad installed on the windows xp and it runs fine... the only issue for me is the mouse is not as accurate and may be some tweaking I could do. That may not be an issue using bootcamp. If you did decide to use parallels be sure to install more ram too. mine came with 2Gb and I had 2Gb added. Parallels is real convenient.

Q. Hello everyone, I am a college student and I'm deciding if what classes I should take for the spring. Do you think it is wise of me to take Micro and Macro at the same time? Are there any concepts that overlaps that might throw me off-track? Any help is greatly appreciated.

A. I personally wouldn't recommend it. There are similar concepts for the first few chapters i.e. supply and demand but it will get tough when you start doing indifference curves for micro and multipliers for macro around the same time in the semester. I say only do it if you must.

Asked by roxy - Fri Jul 31 18:45:54 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Step #1 to financial health is to eliminate all debt!!! You should always start off with any savings, if savings are exhausted and you cannot afford monthly payments to eliminate debt then you should use your Roth, contributions are always accessible regardless of age without penalty, but be careful because interest is not tax free until 591/2. Once your debts are eliminated you will have freed up cash flow to begin contributing again to your Roth. Note, if your investments are yielding less than the interest expense of your debt than you are moving backward, so pay them off and start moving forward. Don't look back!! How long should a magic act be time wise?
Q. Right now, I'm making a magic act I'll be performing at children's birthday parties or dinner parties. It's about 8 tricks long, and I'm expecting it to be 25-30 minutes long when I practice it. I don't want it to be too long so that the audience gets bored, but I don't want it to be too short so that the audience doesn't get enough magic. How long do you think a magic act should be time wise?
Asked by Jon - Sun Jan 4 18:12:27 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I think you should definitely trim down your act. Children are the hardest people to perform for, since their attention span is so short. You haven't specified just how old the kids will be, but if they're around or under 12 years old, they will be running around the whole place by the time you get to your 4th trick. Another very important thing is to pick out which tricks to perform. Little kids hate complicated. They really like short, visual tricks. Sponge Ball routines are arguably the best tricks to perform for kids. You can keep a group of children entertained for 10 minutes just with the old "put a ball in each hand, and voila, they both appear in one hand" trick. I assure you that as long as you don't get caught, every single… [cont.]
