Is it wise to ask One person to write multiple recommendations, each 1 for a different school?
Q. For schools I mean graduate School. I'm applying to a few schools, some for international relations, others for counseling psychology. I have an (unfortunately) short list of people whom I can ask for recommendations, some of these people whom I have asked for recommendations already for other things (internships, jobs, schools etc.) I was wondering if it was wise to ask of them to write recommendations for different schools at the same time. Thanks.

A. I guess you can but it's not necessary and I've never heard of it being done. Have them write one great letter addressed "To Whom It May Concern" and make copies. You are putting this person out, minimize the work on their end. Plus, how different are these individual letters going to be anyway? Unless the person has some unique and special qualifications in the field or connection to the school, it'll be the same. Good luck!

Is it wise to pay for European hostels online and in advance?
Q. Im planning on backpacking through Europe for 60-90 days and wondered is it really a good idea to pay online for hostel reservations in advance? I read other posts saying that its wise to to pay a percentage but all the online sites that ive browsed through require full payment. Has anyone had bad experiences using this method?

A. I've only good experiences booking hostels online with established booking agents. The only time I turned up and the place didn't honour my reservation was when I booked directly with a hotel via email. There's a few online hostel sites. This one is pretty good:

Is it wise to invest in different mutual fund companies or just one?
Q. Is it wise to invest in different mutual fund companies or just one company for maximum returns? My reason is that in case Company A fails, I still have a backup with other companies. What is your opinion on this, will it matter if I invest in different companies? What are the chances that a mutual fund company will actually fail/close? About diversification: isn't mutual funds already in itself diversification?
Asked by ratmforever - Tue Dec 11 08:50:57 2007 - - 7 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Mutual Fund companies tend to not fold, but I can understand your concern. But generally when people invest in funds they look at different types of funds - like large cap domestic, international, small cap domestic, emerging markets, etc. It certainly can't hurt you to go with different fund companies. I suggest you take a look at index funds - Vanguard and Fidelity have some good ones. They invest in a variety of markets and beat mutual funds over time. They also have low expense ratios. So if you want to look at seperate fund companies take a look at some of Vanguard's index funds.

Why is it wise to wear gloves when spreading fertilizer in a garden?
Q. Why is it wise to wear gloves when spreading fertilizer in a garden?
Asked by bralex94 - Thu May 8 23:17:26 2008 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Straight fertilizers are usually salts so they can dry out your skin and cause pain in cuts. However, most of the more expensive brands are "prilled" ..wrapped in soluble little bubbles and are less likely to harm a bare hand. OTOH, some fertilizers, prilled and not, have weed killers in the blend that can be absorbed through the skin. Wearing gloves is a sensible precaution as is eye protection and a dust protector over the mouth, although none of these are mandatory.

How wise is to carry on investing in Insurance Retirement Plan?
Q. I have taken up an enrichment policy 3 yrs back. In the present market scenario how wise is to keep paying premium for 15 yrs more? Or is it better to surrender it and invest it in other avenues like Real estate? Your opinion please.
Asked by sark299 - Mon Jul 21 03:54:23 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Since you don't state the Insurance Company (and "Enrichment policy" gives 1,430 'hits' in google) I can't be bothered to track it down and find out how well it's performing .. Pension Plans are long term (25 years) .. right now the market is depressed so any 'transfer value' is likley to be quite low .. However you MIGHT be better off transferring into another scheme, especially since it would seem you do not have an actual Pension (which would get Tax Relief at your marginal rate) but rather some sort of 'Insurance' policy (which typically attracts high charges) .. if 10,000's are involved you need to speak to an IFA (Independent Financial Adviser)

Is it wise to agree to a settlement on an unpaid credit card balance with a collection agency?
Q. In recent weeks, I've been offered to make a settlement on some of my unpaid credit card balances with a few of the collection agencies that have been calling my house frequently. Personally, I don't think that's a wise decision because it may affect my credit background with all three major credit bureaus. As we all know, collection agencies are known to hound consumers to death when it involves collecting money on bad debts and charged-off accounts from former creditors. I understand credit advisors across the country don't recommend a consumer to "settle" an account with neither a creditor nor a collection agency. I'd rather just face the music and pay the balance on record or if push comes to shove, maybe consider debt… [cont.]
Asked by Roderick C - Wed Aug 8 16:33:54 2007 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Well, if the collection agency is legitimate, and they really have assumed the collection of the debt, then it might be a good thing to do. Assume you owe $10,000. If the credit card company "gives up" collecting it from you, they'll often sell the debt to a collection agency for much less - say $3000. So if the collection agency can get you to pay $5000, everybody wins. Beware the strong-arm tactics employed by the collection agencies, though. They should treat you fairly and courteously, and should offer you a payment schedule.

Do you think it is wise to pay a $125 application fee for an apartment?
Q. If $25 goes toward credit report and the rest goes towards a safety inspection and a fire inspection, and the fee is non-refundable, why would one pay for anything extra if they are not guaranteed an apartment? My credit rating is awesome and shouldn't have a problem getting it but wouldn't it be wise to be guaranteed the apartment before paying for the inspections? I'd rather give them $25 to run the credit report and the rest when I'm guaranteed an apartment. Is this a wise decision?
Asked by metalman31 - Wed Apr 26 17:52:28 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I've been a property owner, landlord and property manager most of my life. The safety & fire inspections in almost every state I've operated in are the responsibility of the property owner, not the renter. In fact I would be in violation of the law in here in CA in our city if I passed those business costs as fees to my renters. Also, if you have a current credit report (less than 6 months old) yourself and can present it at the time of application, I would have to waive the credit report fee. How in the world are they getting away with charging a non-refundable fee before the lease is signed?

Is it wise to take microeconomics and macroeconomics at the same time?
Q. Hello everyone, I am a college student and I'm deciding if what classes I should take for the spring. Do you think it is wise of me to take Micro and Macro at the same time? Are there any concepts that overlaps that might throw me off-track? Any help is greatly appreciated.

A. I personally wouldn't recommend it. There are similar concepts for the first few chapters i.e. supply and demand but it will get tough when you start doing indifference curves for micro and multipliers for macro around the same time in the semester. I say only do it if you must.

A. The internet is full of smug people who like to try and make anyone with a belief in God feel inferior for their beliefs, as you probably knew already, hence most of your answers. Anyway, as a Christian, I personally don't believe that the second coming will be anytime soon as evidenced by each generation thinking that the second coming will be in their lifetime for pretty much the past 2000 years. Why should it happen in our generation where it has not happened in the past 25 or so generations who have been sure that it would happen soon? That is my philosophy anyway!

What characteristics qualify a person to be wise?
Q. is it age? experience? intuitiveness? what makes someone wise beyond their years? is that even possible? would you seek advice from someone you think is wise based on these characteristics?
Asked by fallingforhim<3 - Sat May 3 23:32:49 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. AGE: I hate to sound cliche, but even people of young ages can surprise us from time to time. We often hear stories of parents learning from their own children. Sometimes children can "see" more than us because they aren't distracted by so many prejudices. Age is only helpful in giving us more experience to work with, but does not guarantee that one will have more wisdom because the quality of how we interpret our experiences and how we learn from them is what truly matters. experience: Experience seems to be the crux for obtaining wisdom, but I do not believe that it is always the case. Sometimes all one must do is think about the other possibilities and implications of a situation rather than going as far as experiencing the actual… [cont.]

Can people become wise without having experience in certain topic?
Q. A lot of older people are wise and it is because they have experienced a lot of events in life. Do you think a person who hasn't will be just as wise?
Asked by My Thong Sparkles - Tue Feb 17 12:34:15 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. To get an accurate picture, understand the differance between "wisdom" and intelligence. Intelligence is the ABILITY to learn new things and can usually be accurately quantified. "Wisdom" probably refers to maturity, which is gained throught experience. This too, can sort of be measured. But the measure is more abstract and open to interpretation.

How long should a magic act be time wise?
Q. Right now, I'm making a magic act I'll be performing at children's birthday parties or dinner parties. It's about 8 tricks long, and I'm expecting it to be 25-30 minutes long when I practice it. I don't want it to be too long so that the audience gets bored, but I don't want it to be too short so that the audience doesn't get enough magic. How long do you think a magic act should be time wise?
Asked by Jon - Sun Jan 4 18:12:27 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I think you should definitely trim down your act. Children are the hardest people to perform for, since their attention span is so short. You haven't specified just how old the kids will be, but if they're around or under 12 years old, they will be running around the whole place by the time you get to your 4th trick. Another very important thing is to pick out which tricks to perform. Little kids hate complicated. They really like short, visual tricks. Sponge Ball routines are arguably the best tricks to perform for kids. You can keep a group of children entertained for 10 minutes just with the old "put a ball in each hand, and voila, they both appear in one hand" trick. I assure you that as long as you don't get caught, every single… [cont.]

What is the bestkind of couch to consider fabric wise when you have a cat?
Q. I heard micro Fiber is great with stains and we are completely sold that thats the best option kid durability wise, but how does it meausre up to cat hair, is it impossible to get it off like velvet, or easy to wipe off? What has worked for you, he has claws so i think leather is a no-no too.
Asked by AntzaGurl - Wed Jan 31 15:09:07 2007 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments

A. of all my furniture, my cat ignores the micro fibre. she loved the leather ottoman (tore it to shreds in one afternoon). the microfibre has a flat pile that cats seem to find useless for claw sharpening purposes. I like the microfibre because its very easy to clean. best way i've ever tried for removing cat hair from upholstery---wear a rubber glove and rub it back and forth on the fabric, the cat hair will stick like glue to the glove and leave the fabric perfectly clean.

Is it wise to sell on landcontract with no interest?
Q. I have 120acres in Northwest Wisconsin. I am thinking of selling it for 200,000 up front and the other 200,000 on a ten year land contract with no interest. Is this a wise move?
Asked by titty948 - Sun Sep 21 08:32:04 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. NO. Land Contracts create a lien on the property which are hard to get removed when the other party defaults. Good luck enforcing the contact in ten years when they fail to pay it off. The US Govt IRS will impute interest and expect you to pay taxes on the imputed interest. Ten years creates adverse possession risks. talk to a lawyer. My answer is incomplete, but these are just a few reasons to just say no to that idea.

A. Speak with your local agent. Generally and maybe not in your case, it is a good idea to have deposits deducted. No missing of a payment, usually. I am not licensed in your state, so I cannot legally offer secured advice. (That is, if I am incorrect, you could sue me.)

A. Well theres an obvious one being canned drinks are usualy safer, bacteria wise. Fountain drinks, like the ones you would get your drink from at McDonalds or the Cinema would be used by more than one person thus giving more of a chance to get sick... Once just drinking cola in the car made me sick and put me of drinking it for a year, this was off a fountain despencer... (dont know if it was the fountain drink that did it thought)
